Synopsis: Marking the 40th anniversary of independence in Lusophone African countries, CAFF will close with The Great Kilapy. In this film Angolan filmmaker Zézé Gamboa brings us a sardonic historical drama about Joãozinho, a good-hearted, apolitical con man who pulls off a massive swindle at the expense of the Portuguese colonial administration the day before Angolan independence. Soon after, he finds himself hailed as a hero of the national liberation struggle. The film offers a gaze at the lives and passions of young people in Luanda and Lisbon during the sixties.
The film will be followed by a discussion with Dr Ros Gray (Goldsmiths, University of London) in conversation with Estrella Sendra (CAFF Director).
This film is part of a love-themed African film series called ‘From Africa, with Love’, in a collaboration between the five African film festivals in the UK: Africa in Motion (AiM) Film Festival in Scotland, Film Africa in London, Afrika Eye in Bristol, Watch-Africa in Wales, and the Cambridge African Film Festival (CAFF), funded by the BFI.
