Country: Mali
Year: 2014

The latest film by one of the leading African filmmakers, Mauritanian Abderrahmane Sissako, TIMBUKTU opened the official competition in Cannes, impressing the jury and winning the Ecumenical Jury Prize and the François-Chalais Prize for its journalistic values. With his characteristic stunning photography, Sissako draws attention to the situation in Timbuktu, a region in North Mali, where jihadists are imposing a regime of terror. Music, laughter, cigarettes and even football have been banned. The film focuses on Kidane and his family, who are living peacefully in the dunes, until Kidane accidentally kills the beloved cow of a fisherman.
