According to a popular saying in Dakar, Senegal, “You can find anything in the world at ColobaneMarket.” The objects in market stalls – colourful clothing, shoes, journals, watches, radios and mobile phones – compel the eye and imagination to travel. Market Imaginary focuses on this famous secondhand market as a sprawling crossroads for people and goods. This documentary also explores the market in relation to its surrounding neighbourhood and the broader imagination of the city’s residents. It features merchants, residents and artists who tell their stories, weaving a narrative about mobility, urbanisation, alternative global economies and the prospects for transforming secondhand goods sustainably and creatively.
We are delighted to welcome Dr Tatiana Thieme (Department of Geography, University of Cambridge) to host a Q&A following the film screening in conversation with Estrella Sendra (Festival Director).
